Car Free Day: loads of fun on the street

Hundreds of Vic Parkians joined the Vic Park Collective on Sunday for some asphalt fun on Kent Street.

For the second consecutive year, Car Free Day proved that, when there are no cars, the public loves to be on the street!

As an encouragement to choose more active modes of transport in their daily lives, we asked locals to leave their car at home and walk, cycle or take public transport to Kent St.

The benefits of fewer cars on the road are not only to save petrol and money, reduce pollution and greenhouse gases emissions, but also to keep active and healthy. There was loads of fun to be had collectively on the road, as we saw on Sunday.

The guys & girls from Perth Bike Polo and the Street Roller Hockey League love to play on the asphalt, and they got to show off their talents for the whole morning.

Both the Vic Park Centre for the Arts and the Victoria Park Carlisle Bowling Club had open days, attracted passersby and enrolled new members. The pop-up library, as always, was a big hit with young and old.

Some flexible people enjoyed a good stretch in the middle of the road with a free yoga class from Pema Yoga.

Kids of all ages got to try a bit of dancing with some expert mentoring from Humphrey’s Dance Studio, while the folks with the Perth Swing Dance Academy hopped around and showed why they are one of the most popular swing squads in Perth.

And there was no lack of energy when the girls from The Jungle Body Fix hit the road – we like to move it!

The Town of Victoria Park Brass Band played everyone’s favourite tunes (big shout out to the Vic Park Community Centre for chairs!), including Dancing in the Rain – although the heavens gave us a break and there was no rain for the whole morning!

Even with all the activity, the highlight was just to sit comfortably on a couch right in the middle of the road, catch up with friends, let the kids colour the street with chalk, and enjoy the good vibes.

We would love if everyday were car free day… while that does not happen, we can’t wait to do it all over again next year!
