Reusable Coffee Cup Review: Frank Green

We told you why we love reusable coffee cups in a previous blog post. This is one of many reusable coffee cup reviews, so you can make an informed choice when you're ready to ditch the takeaway coffee cup and buy your own reusable coffee cup.

Next on the list is the super cool Frank Green.

Last year Frank Green won a Good Design Award and it’s no wonder, its attractive design is certainly appealing to the eye. The smart cup is also installed with a CafePay chip so you can literally swipe your cup to pay for your drink (with participating cafes with the CafePay system). We love it when good design and sustainability come together!

What is it made of?

The Frank Green ‘smart cup’ reusable coffee cup is made from a BPA free and non-toxic plastic that claims to be stain and odour resistant. There is also a thermo plastic outer layer which keeps your coffee hotter for longer and has a nice grip feel to it. The cup is recyclable (plastic number 7 which is accepted in the Town of Victoria Park).

Is it portable?

Frank Green is probably the most portable of the cups we have reviewed given that it has a spill resistant lid. There is a push button that releases the seal and allows a decent flow of coffee, press again to seal it back up. I tested the cup sitting upside down full of water and not a drop came out. Pretty handy for those wanting to grab a coffee on the way out somewhere; you could throw it in your bag and feel safe knowing it won’t spill, which is perfect for cyclists and commuters.

Is it easy to clean?

The Frank Green smart cup is dishwasher safe and easy to clean. The spill resistant lid does have a mechanism inside which means you may need to unscrew the mechanism occasionally to ensure it is 100% clean.

Is it barista friendly?

The Frank Green smart cup is barista friendly, however you may want to remind the barista to fill to the top of the coloured section of the cup (not beyond the transparent section) otherwise the lid will not close without coffee pouring out!

How much does it cost?

12oz is $34.95 online (we’ve seen them at Antz and Harvest Espresso)

Where is it made?

The Frank Green cup is designed, engineered and made in Australia.

What is the company philosophy?

Frank Green have a great sustainability philosophy right across the board from designing, to manufacturing, to packaging. Online orders raise money for Earthwatch.

The Frank Green Smart Cup is perfect for…

The commuter or cyclist who needs a spill resistant cup, and for those who love good design. Also for those who want a recyclable product or love buying Australian made.

Keep your eyes out for our competition at the end of our review process where you could win the glass and plastic KeepCups pictured above!
